Ohio in the Mid Western United States is part of the Great Lakes region. Ohio borrows it's name from the Iroquoin indian word which means - it is beautiful. The area was first settled by arrivals from New England, Appalachia, the Mid-Atlantic States and the Upper South, in the 1700's. Now the city is the seventh most populous in America and was the first state admitted to the Union. It's residents are known as BuckEye's after the Buckeye tree...or just plain Ohioans. Ohio can also boast of having been the region which gave the Unites States one of it's single greatest achievements in the Underground Railroad. One of the best-known prehistoric earthworks in the Ohio Valley is to be found in the Great Serpent Mound in Peebles. The massive structure is almost a quarter of a mile in
length and is an effigy describing an uncoiling
serpent with its mouth apparently grasping at an unknown
object.Serpent Mound is llikely to have been the handiwork
